Affordable homes in Peterlee given approval

Planning permission has been granted for new ‘Rent to Buy’ houses in Peterlee.

County Durham Housing Group has been given permission for the construction of 12 three-bedroom family homes in Matterdale Road as part of a £32m investment programme across the county. The development has been designed specifically to meet demand for affordable homes in the Peterlee area.

The new homes were given unanimous approval by Durham County Council’s Area Planning Committee on Tuesday, 10 April, subject to completion of a Section 106 agreement. Construction is expected to start later in 2018.

All 12 new houses will be offered under the government backed ‘Rent to Buy’ scheme. Rent to Buy is designed to ease the transition from renting to buying a home by offering a reduced rent, usually around 20% below the market rate. The aim is to give people the opportunity to save for a deposit at the same time and buy their home after five years.

The homes will feature high levels of insulation, the latest heating systems and double glazing. They are expected to bring big savings to residents when compared with older properties in the area.

County Durham Housing Group Head of Development and Commercial Property, Kate Abson, said: “This project has been created to help Peterlee families get their first foot on to the property ladder. We understand that demand for affordable homes in east Durham is strong and it was great to hear passionate support for this scheme from the council’s Area Planning Committee members.

“We’re already working on preparations for construction and are very much looking forward to starting work on site later this year.”

The Matterdale Road development is part of a programme of construction across the region by County Durham Housing Group. In total 300 new homes will be built by the group on 17 sites between now and 2020. Each site is being tailored to the needs of the local community with properties ranging from wheelchair accessible bungalows to three-bedroom family homes. As well as rent to buy opportunities, many homes will be available for affordable rent too.
