Planning permission has been granted for more than 40 homes in a key Peterlee development.
A mix of family houses and bungalows are set to be built in Tamar Close and Teign Close near the heart of Peterlee as part of a County Durham Housing Group programme. The project will feature 29 three-bed family houses alongside 10 two- and two three-bed bungalows.
The new homes were given approval by Durham County Council’s Area Planning Committee on Tuesday, 10 July, subject to completion of a Section 106 agreement. Construction is expected to start during early 2019.
The 12 bungalows, which will be easily adaptable for wheelchair users, will be available for affordable rent. All 29 houses will be available under the government backed ‘Rent to Buy’ scheme. Rent to Buy is designed to ease the transition from renting to buying a home by offering a reduced rent, usually around 20% below the market rate. The aim is to give people the opportunity to save for a deposit at the same time and buy their home after five years.
The site of the new development was formerly used for housing, but has been vacant for some time. The new homes will feature high levels of insulation, the latest heating systems and double glazing. They are expected to bring big savings to residents when compared with older properties in the area.
County Durham Housing Group Head of Development and Commercial Property, Kate Abson, said: “These new homes will be a major boost to Peterlee; an area where demand for affordable homes is very high right now.
“All of our developments are designed to meet the needs of their local communities. The mix of family homes and wheelchair adaptable bungalows will help to fill a clear need in the area.”
The Peterlee development is the latest part of a £54m programme of affordable home construction by County Durham Housing Group. In total 545 new homes are being built across more than 20 sites stretching from rural Weardale to the Durham coast.
